MODEL FOR THE FUTURE
DECENTRALIZED ENERGY SUPPLY

The energy supply landscape in Germany, currently dominated by centralized large-scale plants, is undergoing a transformation. As a result of the weak signals that are coming from the electricity market, it is increasingly difficult for large, inflexible energy generation units that are not aligned with demand to be operated economically. Germany’s power grid is heavily utilized due to the feed-in of renewable energies, which means that ensuring an uninterrupted supply of energy requires considerable investments in the German power grid. The expansion of the grid has been stalled for years. The decentralized generation of electricity lowers the burden on the grid. Proximity to the consumer coupled with flexibility ensure that energy generation can be adapted to the demand behavior of the customer in question. At the same time, the use of decentralized CHP plants represents a highly efficient technology that can make a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Companies in energy-intensive industries are therefore faced with the task of ensuring a sustainable supply of process heat and electricity for their production needs.

FLEXIBILITY AND RELIABILITY WITH
THE RIGHT FUEL MIX

Due to the particular characteristics of wind and solar energy, the cannot provide the constant energy supply required by most production and industrial plants. A balanced fuel mix, tailored to the consumer's needs as well as to the site itself and the surrounding conditions, plays a crucial role.

In addition to more traditional fuels such as natural gas, oil, and coal, alternative fuels such as biogas, biomass and waste fuels have gained more attention in the market over the past decade. Due primarily to their lower energy density and limited availability, these fuels are ideally suited for use in small, decentralized heating plants or power stations.

STATE-OF-THE-ART
TECHNOLOGY

In the last 10 years, the price of decentralized energy generation systems has dropped by 75%, making them more efficient, reliable and, most importantly, ready for industrial-scale applications.

The effective utilization of energy contained in fuel using combined heat and power generation and the reliability of such plants make them particularly attractive. The variety of technologies available on the market makes it possible to use a wide range of fuels and to implement a variety of concepts with freedom to select the proportions of thermal or electrical energy. As a result, decentralized energy generation units can fully meet the requirements of most industrial energy consumers, both in terms of quality and quantity.

The most commonly used solutions for decentralized energy generation are combined heat and power (CHP) units, steam turbines and gas turbines (GUD) in combination with a waste heat boiler.

The energy supply from CHP plants is especially versatile and cost-effective. These can be adapted to different fuels such as natural gas, biogas, etc. and can be used economically in a range between 100 kilowatts and 10 megawatts. They are therefore not only ideal for industrial applications, but are also a frequently used technology for district heating suppliers, municipalities and large properties.
